PVD Materials

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is a process used in the semiconductor industry to deposit thin films of material onto the surface of a substrate (such as a semiconductor wafer). During PVD, a material is heated until it reaches a high enough temperature to vaporize, and then the vapor is deposited onto the substrate. PVD thin film coating is widely used in the semiconductor industry because it can produce high-quality films with precise control over thickness, composition, and uniformity. It is also compatible with high-temperature processing, making it suitable for the manufacture of advanced semiconductor devices. The materials used in PVD for the semiconductor industry include: Metals: Aluminum (Al), Copper (Cu), Gold (Au), Silver (Ag), Chromium (Cr), and others, which are used for forming interconnects, metallization layers, and other electrical conductors. Dielectric materials: Silicon dioxide (SiO2), Silicon nitride (Si3N4), Titanium dioxide (TiO2), and others, which are used for insulation, passivation, and other non-conducting layers. Adhesion layers: Titanium (Ti) and Tantalum (Ta) are often used as adhesion layers to improve the adherence of the deposited films to the substrate. The choice of PVD material depends on the desired properties of the film, including its electrical and thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and resistance to oxidation and corrosion. The specific requirements of the semiconductor manufacturing process, including compatibility with high-temperature processing, must also be considered when selecting the PVD material.
