Photovoltaic (PV) cells, also known as solar cells, are electronic devices that convert sunlight directly into electricity. PV cells are typically made from crystalline silicon, but can also be made from thin films of other materials like cadmium telluride, copper indium gallium selenide, and amorphous silicon. The manufacturing process for PV cells involves several steps, including: Wafer production: Crystalline silicon wafers are produced from silicon ingots by sawing them into thin slices. Cell fabrication: The wafers are then cleaned, textured, and coated with anti-reflective material to increase the amount of light they absorb. Metal contacts are then added to the front and back of the cell to collect the electricity produced by the cell. Module assembly: PV cells are connected in series and parallel to form a PV module. The module is then sealed in a weather-resistant enclosure and connected to an electrical system. PV cell manufacturing requires a clean and controlled manufacturing environment to ensure high-quality and efficient cells. The process also involves the use of chemicals and energy, making environmental considerations important in the production process.
