The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has revealed that global semiconductor industry sales in 2023 amounted to $526.8 billion, reflecting an 8.2% decrease from 2022's record high of $574.1 billion. Despite a slow start, sales picked up during the second half of 2023, with fourth-quarter sales reaching $146.0 billion, marking an 11.6% increase from the same period in 2022 and an 8.4% rise from the third quarter of 2023.

December 2023 saw global sales of $48.6 billion, a 1.5% increase from November 2023. These monthly sales figures are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization and represent a three-month moving average. Notably, SIA represents 99% of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip firms.

SIA President and CEO John Neuffer stated, "Global semiconductor sales were sluggish early in 2023 but rebounded strongly during the second half of the year, and double-digit market growth is projected for 2024." He also emphasized the growing significance of chips in various products and highlighted the bright long-term outlook for the semiconductor market, urging support for policies that bolster R&D, strengthen the semiconductor workforce, and reduce trade barriers to drive continued growth and innovation in the industry.

On a regional basis, Europe was the sole market to experience annual growth in 2023, with sales increasing by 4.0%. However, annual sales declined in other regional markets: Japan (-3.1%), the Americas (-5.2%), Asia-Pacific/All Other (-10.1%), and China (-14.0%). December 2023 sales increased compared to November 2023 in China (4.7%), the Americas (1.8%), and Asia Pacific/All Other (0.3%) but decreased in Japan (-2.4%) and Europe (-3.9%).

In terms of specific product segments, logic products recorded the highest sales, totaling $178.5 billion in 2023, followed by memory products at $92.3 billion. Microcontroller units (MCUs) saw a notable 11.4% growth to reach $27.9 billion. The automotive ICs segment experienced a remarkable 23.7% year-over-year growth, achieving a record total of $42.2 billion in sales.
