CdTe (Cadmium Telluride) Substrates

Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) is a direct bandgap semiconductor material that is commonly used in the production of photovoltaic cells for solar panels. As a substrate material, CdTe is known for its high absorption coefficient, which makes it highly efficient at converting light into electrical energy. It is also a low-cost alternative to traditional silicon-based solar cells, making it attractive for large-scale deployment. CdTe substrates are typically made by depositing a thin layer of CdTe onto a suitable substrate material, such as glass or a metallic substrate. This can be done using a variety of techniques, including molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Once the CdTe layer has been deposited, it can be processed into solar cells by adding a back contact, such as a thin layer of metal, and other necessary components. The resulting solar cells can then be integrated into solar panels and used to generate electricity. In addition to its use in solar cells, CdTe is also used in other applications such as radiation detection and as a material for producing X-ray and gamma-ray imaging detectors.
