China and Brazil Collaborate on Semiconductors as Brazil Explores Technology Ties with Beijing

During a meeting between Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the two nations agreed to establish a working group to pursue cooperation on semiconductor technology. This comes as Brazil seeks to strengthen its ties with China in sensitive technology areas, despite concerns from other countries about security risks associated with Chinese products. Brazil is interested in attracting Chinese investment in areas such as 5G telecommunications, the Internet, and cybersecurity, and has expressed openness to Chinese semiconductor factories in Brazil. As part of their cooperation, China and Brazil will explore mechanisms for joint research and development activities involving public, private, and academic institutions, as well as scientist exchanges and sharing of scientific papers. President Lula also visited Huawei's research center in Shanghai and was briefed on its technology, including trying out its virtual reality headset.
