Samsung is set to utilize its own Exynos brand of application processors in the upcoming Galaxy S24 Series, as reported by TheElec. This move comes after the South Korean tech giant faced yield issues with the Exynos chips and consequently relied solely on Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips for its Galaxy S23 Series earlier this year.
According to sources, Samsung will feature both Exynos and Snapdragon APs in the Galaxy S24 Series. Specifically, the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus models will house the Exynos 2400 processor, which has been specifically designed by Samsung System LSI, the company's logic chip design arm. In North America, models sold will also incorporate Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. However, smartphones launching in South Korea and Europe will primarily rely on the Exynos chips.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra will exclusively utilize the Snapdragon Gen 3 processor, irrespective of the regions it is sold in. Both the Exynos and Snapdragon processors are set to be manufactured by Samsung Foundry, Samsung's contract chip production unit.
Samsung's decision to use Exynos chips offers several advantages. Firstly, it allows the MX Business, Samsung's smartphone unit, to exercise better cost control, as it reduces dependence on external chip suppliers such as Qualcomm. This move empowers Samsung to negotiate better prices and further optimize its operations.
By employing Exynos chips, there are positive implications for Samsung System LSI and Samsung Foundry in their respective markets. Although these entities are not industry leaders, the inclusion of Exynos chips in the Galaxy S24 Series grants them increased prominence and facilitates their growth trajectory. Notably, American chip giants like Qualcomm and Intel, as well as Taiwan's MediaTek, currently dominate the logic space, while TSMC remains the world's largest contract chip producer.
In line with this, the recently released Galaxy S23 FE features the Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processors, showcasing Samsung's multi-chip approach for different models within its smartphone lineup.
