Based on the experience of CSEM S/A (Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology), which in the 80s already believed in innovation for the development of the country, FIR Capital brought the model to Brazil.

In 2006, we were born with the support of our Swiss partner, and of the Government of Minas Gerais state through its Research Support Foundation, Fapemig (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais).

We create Products, applications and companies of high technological content, offering means to increase productivity, competitiveness and new market opportunities..

Our role is to develop a link between science, technology, market and industry, with the constitution of new companies and niches to operate in, thus activating the entire value chain.

CSEM Brasil invests in science applied to research and development projects, developing original solutions focused on the market and on the challenges faced by our customers.

By encouraging technological innovation, we contribute to strategic sectors of the economy and we improve Brazil’s competitiveness at global level, seeking economic sustainability and social development.

CSEM Brasil has the most modern facilities, equipment and laboratories for PD&I, characterization, design and prototyping of organic electronic devices. In addition, the center has the largest and most modern roll-to-roll printing line in the world, with 5 sequential stations for the production of organic solar panels.

The building has two floors, the first one with laboratories – cleanrooms class 10,000 and 1,000 – and the second floor is the administrative office.

The cleanrooms include Electronics, Chemistry and Optics laboratories equipped with the most modern systems, such as the five-layer in-line blade coating used to produce devices with organic semiconductors.

Some examples of equipment used by CSEM are: Glove Box equipped with a plasma evaporation chamber, Surface Scanner, UV-VIS Laminator, Laser & Trimmer, Screen & Stencil Printer, Viscometer, Mini Roll, Climate Chamber, Solar Simulator, Roller Mixer, Optical Light Source, Micro-processing drying oven, Digital Oscilloscope, among many others.

CSEM Brasil invested 10 years of work and over BRL 100 million to create a research, development and support infrastructure and became a reference center connected to an international innovation ecosystem. It is worth mentioning our cleanrooms, categories 1,000 to 10,000, including all stages of production.

With a climatic chamber to storage high-sensitivity materials, a furnace for treatment of unpolymerized ceramic material, a high-speed precision laser for cutting and adjusting devices, and a high precision printed circuit printer, it is possible to develop and manufacture in the Brazil some of the most important miniaturized elements for the precision electronics industry.

We also have programmable dryers, automatic stacker with high-precision optical alignment, programmable high-pressure isostatic laminator, ultra-precision cutting system, hot blade for high and low temperature ceramics, and precision apparatus to form circuit paths.

Our laboratories use industrial furnaces for LTCC and HTCC, Reflow welding furnace and tunnel furnace for post-firing processes. They also use high-resolution profilometer, high precision digital viscometer, programmable conditioning greenhouse, and 2D and 3D microscopes and stereoscopic loupes. We also have an assembly machine for electronic components, a liquid dispenser for encapsulation of circuits, and an automatic Stencil & Screen Cleaner.

COMPETENCES
PRINTED ELECTRONICS
Printed electronics is a set of printing techniques and methods used to produce electronic devices. These devices are created from the deposition of semiconductor inks on any substrate. CSEM Brasil specializes in the printing processes of electronic devices, such as roll-to-roll printing, slot die, screen printing, blade coating and spiral roll coating.

In the printing processes, any solution-processed materials, such as organic or inorganic semiconductors, metal conductors, nanoparticles, nanotubes, among others, can be used. These materials are capable of producing electronic circuits on different types of substrates (including flexible surfaces), such as plastics, glass, metals and ceramics.

The organic photovoltaics (OPV) is an outstanding case in which CSEM is the world leader in terms of results. OPV is the technology of the future to produce solar energy. Due to the characteristics of printed electronics, it was possible to make it lightweight, transparent, flexible, recyclable, with low carbon footprint and great design appeal.

CSEM Brasil is at the forefront of this next generation semiconductor industry. Globally, we are the most prepared research center to continue the OPV research and to place this technology in the market.

Printed electronics include technologies such as organic and hybrid photovoltaic (OPV/DSSC) cells, supercapacitors and printed batteries, OLEDs, electroluminescent devices, fuel cells, flexible circuits, low cost radio frequency identifiers (RFID) and antennas, printed sensors, as well as memory and logical processing devices.

All technologies are compatible with roll-to-roll printing manufacturing processes, using flexible substrates with different types of materials, in a continuous, highly scalable and cost-effective production process.

Printed electronics applications serve various sectors of the economy, such as the energy, automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, health, consumer electronics, automation and many other segments.

As for the development of projects with the industry, the main focus of CSEM currently is the development of new applications for organic solar panels (OPV). However, projects in the area of electroluminescence have already been carried out, and the current infrastructure is prepared for display and flexible electronics printing.
